Five Inner Skills for Leading through Complexity

When vision and strategy aren't enough

Why Inner Skills and Why the Five Senses?
More and more frequently, the challenges people are involved with today require the ability to lead through complexity. When faced with systemic complexity, we tend to look 'out there' at the multiplicity, variability and dynamism of interacting elements that give rise to unpredictability and 'emergent' solutions.

There is another aspect of complexity, however, which directly impacts our effectiveness in relation to systemic complexity: the human response to the challenges we face. How well we are able to manage ourselves and respond in these situations may depend upon the inner skills we've developed for leading through complexity.

This three-day program is designed for individuals ready to develop new areas of self-awareness and self-mastery relevant to leading through complexity. We have organized the inner skills around the five senses so participants will have an easy way to remember what they can draw upon and practice.

Experiential exercises draw upon the complexity and challenges of participants' real work, facilitating the ease with which learning translates into applicable skill. As desired, program content and length may be modified to fit a client's needs and interests.

You'll find an overview of these skills and a set of questions with which to assess yourself in the paper below.

Learning objectives address:

Seeing More
  • To identify and apply distinctions and models that could offer useful new perspectives, improve self- or situational-awareness, expand or narrow the range of potential actions and help evaluate outcomes
  • To borrow other's eyes, opening to perspectives and insights other than your own, and expanding the range of options you can see
  • To see oneself in action more clearly, building the self-awareness that enables more choice-ful action
Listening Well
  • To become aware of how you're listening to others and the influence it has on their engagement with you, and to learn to shift the quality of your listening to create a more beneficial interaction
  • To tune in to how others are listening to you to adapt your speaking and to check for understanding
Putting Your Nose In The Wind
  • To develop the 'negative capability' to drop what you think you know to make room for experimentation and learning
  • To tune in to what is actually present and arising as you test new directions, with a readiness to shift in response
Tasting and Savoring What's Right in the World
  • To develop a 'discerning palette' through which to design and test new approaches for moving into unknown territory
  • To take time to notice, appreciate and gain nourishment from what's actually working
Feeling into your Balance and Commitment
  • To notice when you're triggered and more quickly re-center and regain your balance
  • To feel into the strength of your convictions as you stand and speak for what really matters
